Pressure Washing Logo

Pressure Washing Logo

A company logo is how people see you it is your trademark in the industry.
Cleaned by Pete; pressure washing logo

Being a old guy I have different views than the newer generation. With that in mind I try to have logos that will carry on the idea of what I do. I power wash so I have a figure of myself washing, plain and simple. This year I have changed my figure to help keep up the looks and keep things fresh at Cleaned by Pete.

I will be using the new logo this year as it captures more of what I look
like. Branding myself to my trade for easy identification of what I do.
Water marking your photos and using a full description of what
is going on will always help. I chose to over-lay my logo on the photo
instead of water marking easy to see and again branding it to
Cleaned by Pete. There is a lot of "photo borrowing" with internet
photos and others that will claim your work as their own. If you
do not wish this to happen then always mark your photos in some way.

House Washing Wednesday: low-pressure house washing Nixa MO

It's House Washing Wednesday over at http://housewashingspringfieldmo.blogspot.com/

I was able to do 3 homes in one day all in the Nixa MO area one near the river which helps to promote the green growth on the home due to the moister in the air all the time. One a rental in town and one across town. Bidding over the phone sometimes leads to a surprise of what needs to be done when you get there. Nothing out of the ordinary this year has be great for the growth of mold, mildew, and algae lots of rain and just the right cool temps to keep it growing. I have a few more photos on my sister blog House Washing Springfield MO, the link is provided above. Here are a few of the worst looking sides of these homes. To see the results from "The Qzarks #1 low-pressure house cleaner you will have to go to http://housewashingspringfieldmo.blogspot.com/ for the view.

Sometimes the job is just weird, rock washing

Sometimes the job is just weird, rock washing in Ozark MO. Being a washer we sometimes run across jobs that are a bit weird. I had one of them today. As I was finishing up cleaning a driveway and removing rust stains I received a call. Can you wash..... I just happen to be heading out to Ozark from Springfield MO to check on something so I said I would stop by.

The customer was doing some landscaping and planting and wanted some very large and dirty rock boulders cleaned before the landscape was finished. The big problem was they were 300 to 400 feet from the closest water supply. No problem I had that much hose on board and with the help of the buffer tank I could do the job. So here are a few photos of the rocks while working on them.
Being able to move hoses from reel to reel and being able to easily move from pump to pump on the service rig makes thing easy to set up and work with. Quick connects on items lines and hoses have made things a lot easier, on me. Customer was quite impressed when I moved things around and was able to reach all the way down the drive-way to the front of the property then hook into the water supply on the home. Being flexible is what won us this job.

Since You Asked; The how and why plumbing on my power-washing truck

This is an outgrowth of the last post on feeding the power washer, with the how and why plumbing on my power-washing set-up. Now I want to say I had a fellow washer ask the other day how and why I set up my service truck. Why did I do this or that, the best answer is I wanted to make it easy for me to use and to assure you as a customer that when I show up the job will be done.

Other washers in the business my not see or find it to their liking. Everyone works different and wants something to fit them. As I stated before I started off in the business as a hood washer, using the heated washer as a tool in the hood cleaning business not as a "pressure washer". Working at night often in an other state one has to become self-proficient at get and keep things running and dealing with emergencies. What if your injector quits working, what if you don't want to have the injector in line? What if you're working with someone else who set their equipment up differently? A burst hose, problems with the pump or motor. Do you stop and tell them I'll be back when I get it fixed? Being able to fix or in my case rearrange things on the fly is why I have done what I have done. I will get the job done and repair back at the shop. Setting up my plumbing with quick connects and the way I have done it works for the way I do things.

The first thing is we always had a back-up washer on board, today is no different with me. Two Mi-T-M washers now go with me on every job overkill or underkill I don't know. Both belt driven models with different outputs which does not enter in to this entry. Why not just get a "new big skid" to use instead? I'm asked my answer even a "new big skid" can and do have problems don't they how often do you want me to replace with a new skid? This year I added a second hose reel also, one for each of the washers usually but often I want to switch from one to the other with out having both reels out. I have things set up to use no injector, an injector bypass or have the option of using different injectors in several different places depending on the hose length. I now have the option to use each washer by it self, both working and linked together, both separately running at the same time, several combinations have opened up for cleaning this year. Making it easy to hook and unhook these washer is a must and to be able to do it at on the job site is a must. Options depending on what Cleaned by Pete is doing.

I have achieved most of this with the use of quick connects for the high-pressure lines. I have some photos to help explain what I'm doing I hope they help to clear things up. I have made thing easier by mounting washers, hose reels, soap tanks and other items to the truck permanently. Meaning this is a dedicated work rig. It is our 2nd work rig these trucks are for work you don't take them to the mall or out to eat dinner. This I feel shows more dedication to the business, I know other may not see it the same way, but once again nobody is all right or all wrong, just an opinion.

Working with a range of whips, short hoses, the injector bypass, several quick connects put together and arranged is different ways and spare injectors we can hook up and into several different arrangements.

Some of the leads and different hose connections that Cleaned by Pete may need to use.

Some of the leads and different hose and quick connections that Cleaned by Pete may need to use.
I will start with the pump heads both these Mi-T-M units use a block or remote unloader mounts. I have always like this way of setting up an unloader better than hanging it off the pump head. You can change it out easier and work on it with much more access, on a side note I have this remote unloader setup on most of our power washers.

Placing a quick connect off the unloader is our first line of making it easy. You can just unplug or plug in what you need it also aids us when winterizing the equipment.
This is a larger line that goes to the next piece of equipment the hose-reel. I can add in a chemical injector at this point if I wish, or move this connection over to the other washer to use it if I wish,
The unloader at this pump is also on a remote block the quick connect is pointing down off the 90* fitting for more room.
Things are still very tight the unloader is right beside the water input which is feed from the garden hose and the homeowners outside water tap. It has a filter on it to help us keep any forien particles from entering the pump.
Shown with the jumper hose attached. Again have the option of running it to the hose-reel an injector or to a hose. These short hose work out well to help pump in and pump out the antifreeze during the winter.
I like to put the chemical injector inline between the unloader and the pump head. I have found my system does not draw as well if I place the injector right in front of the hose reel. I like to use some hose between seems to draw chemicals / soap better on my system.

By-pass injector set up to the top hose-reel the soap tank is the white tank on the left and is feed by the white line leading to the adjustable chemical injector. By turning the ball valve you can by pass the injector having full pressure and flow to the rest of the system.
Our injector in line to the hose-reel all components have quick connects so you can quickly make changes in the system. Again depending on the lead to what washer is feeding it.
The lead of feed hose runs unseen under the chrome rail alone the trucks flat bed.
Now arriving at the hose-reel, If you have not guessed...... yes quick connects once again. The hoses are also fitted to the hose-reels with the same style quick connects I can unroll unhook and plug in to the other hoses if I should need more. Also if a hose should burst I can unhook and replace making quick time of it with out having to get out the tools. The burst hose is out of the system and I can keep going on with the work. If a pump, motor, or unloader in either system just moving the output hose over and the water feed I'm back in business again.

Lead hose at the top hose reel.
Top hose-reel connected.
Same lead hose connected to the bottom reel.
By running another jumper and hooking it up to the other reel I can use both washer with either reel having the option of two men working.

I now have the option of using both pumps to one output hose by using a Siamese linking system again it can be hooked to the injector then to what ever reel I wish to use. Having a 9 gpm output. Again this is the way I have chosen to do my plumbing on my outfit. Right or wrong it serves me the best. With the use of quick connects I have tried to make thing easy to fix and trouble shoot.

Both Cleaned by Pete's power washers together, the green hoses are return lines to the tank.
The green hoses are return (bypass) lines to the water tank one pump is tank feed the other is pressure feed. The pressure fed washer uses the tank as a dump tank in bypass mode, helping to keep the pump unit cooler (not recycling water). When using both pumps the dumping bypass helps to feed the water fed pump system.
Both Cleaned by Pete's pressure washers together, the green hoses are return lines to the tank. The gray with red stripped hose on the reel is the feed hose for the system.

What Do You Want! :putting together a custom power washer

What Do You Want! :putting together a custom power washer. We all have different ideas of what we want to work with. We all have ideas to change our working equipment to be even better. If they only did this or that. Well the manufactures did not call me when they built it so it could fit just my needs. That leaves me to put a washer together myself the way it fits my needs.

Setting the stage I wanted a smaller footprint washer with power enough to do concrete and at the same time wanted reliability and a long-life for it and the components. Belt drives pumps turn at half speed this gives the pump drawing power and since it is not turning as fast you should double the life of a direct-drive washer. Belt drives are great but take up more space and with the pulleys and belt drive set-up. Added weight of the belt guards the tentioner brackets, the pulleys them selves and a larger stronger mounting plate to handle all this is something I was looking to avoid. I have had the "V-twin" over head valve motors and while proven I personally do not like them. I know right now some are ready to come to blows over that statement. More moving parts, a higher profile, and a bit top-heavy for my taste so to speak. This is what I am looking to solve in this build.

For the motor I picked the old Briggs 180* opposed flathead twin-cylinder motor. Very reliable lower profile a old work-horse of a motor. flathead motors have fewer moving parts and develop more tourk something I'm looking for. The 180* lay out means it is a smoother running motor also this is also a plus. To shorten up the footprint and still give the larger pump a greater lifespan I'm going with a RS500 gearbox to replace the belt system. This gearbox will now take the 3450 RPMs of the motor and reduce it to 1700 RPMs required by the pump. It will look much like a direct-drive power washer and take up much less room. I have chosen a K-5 unloader for this build simply because I had 2 sitting on the shelf. The last item is I wanted a big gastank nothing worst than running out of gas when you have 10 feet left to clean on a job. I happened to find this Sears Craftsman power washer and had the cage wheels and tank I had been looking for. An older gentleman bought it at an auction and never used it. I removed the pump and motor and mounted it on a old two wheel pressure washing cart a neighbor had given me and I'll try to sell at a later time. The pump I have a spare General 5.5 gpm at 3000 psi sitting here and will be using it for the build. Generals are good pumps and we have a part supply house here local with every part needed in stock to keep one up and running.

Cleaned by Pete putting together a new washer to serve the customers better with all the ideas and needs that I had to be filled.

Cleaned by Pete putting together a new washer to serve the customers better.

Have most of the parts to build up another power washer. Using the gear-box will give me a smaller footprint than the old belt drives but will still give me the longer life of the pump. 18 hp Briggs 180 opposed twin with custom manifold, General pump, K5 unloader, RS500 gearbox, large gas tank in a Craftsman frame. Have the sheet-metal and fan off the motor for the build. Have to see how it goes together now.

Well this is where I'm at today have most of the parts and fittings.  I will start to build and see what I can create. I don't know if it will be better than others but I will only have one person to blame if it does not work out as I planned.

Hydro Blasting what is it?

Hydro Blasting what is it?

You can call it what you wish some refer to as sand-blasting or a all encompassing term of "Media blasting". Most of the power washing suppliers will refer to it as "wet sandblasting". With so many terms it is hard to bill and sell this service to customers. They simply do not know where to look or what the term means. I do a lot of auto and bike restorations a small market for us but it's growing quickly with that in mind I thought an article on blasting was in order. If you follow me here you know I have been in business for a while and have grown our company branding but we can always use help in getting recognition and promotion on this service.
Using attachments such as these with a pressure washer of 3500 to 4000 psi at 4 gallons a minute and specialized blasting media, Cleaned by Pete "Hydro Blasts" autos, bike, along with other items. Wet sand-blasting  or media blasting is a growing field in the power washing industry.

The power washing or pressure washing industry can not even settle on one general name or category for what we do as professionals washers. Even that term "professional washers" is a misnomer I do more than just wash. Blasting paint and rust removal happens to be one of those services. I feel it is one of the best add on services you can have once you know and understand it. It is far more than mixing media and squirting it out in a water stream. You need not have one of the large units that are specially designed for hydro blasting if you are like me and do smaller jobs the car pictured below took about 3 hours total time to do, and I did it with my 4000 psi @ 4 gpm machine just right for doing this type of blasting and rust removal.

I am try to raise up the level of what we as power washers do. Over the weekend I was working on a car that needed some attention. Knowing what to do, how to do it, and what to use is more important to me than just the job. What I'm saying is that it is more or an art an not damaging any thing is a must. Using water has advantages and disadvantages. You need not worry about tenting, respiration hoods or clouds of what maybe considered more toxic by the "EPA" water coated media falls back down and any stripped materials do also. This is the biggest plus or advantage. Hydro blasting also uses less media it can reuse any media that becomes trapped in the water stream. With air it hits and bounces off or becomes airborne thus the need for hoods and tenting. Water keeps sheet metal panels from warping under heat caused by the air method of blasting. With the same equipment we can use several different types of media.

I think we as an industry should consider coming together and referring to this type of work as "Hydro Blasting" and promote it under one such banner. I can do more with a power washer or pressure washer than you think this is just one service. It can be one of the larger growing services with the right knowledge of what it can do. We can start to ban together and doing so customers and promotions of it can help out our bottom line. If we can show that with water and the right media, hydro blasting will work for more that you can guess.

Cleaned by Pete does hydro blasting or media blasting on several different surfaces or substrates. We do mainly auto and bike restorations a untapped field of blasting. Mobile blasting for those who are restoring their dreams from the past. Working on finer cars and bikes is what we like to do. This same service can be used for stripping paint from parking lots, graffiti removal and other service. Soda blasting in the food service area for cleaning is another field you can use soda to clean equipment inside and since soda is nonabrasive it can be used around moving equipment as conveyers and production machinery need to be cleaned or stripped. Bring this service to the for front can be a new large field for this industry. Soda is also great for removing hard water marks from tiles around pools and fountains it also can help to remove efflorescence from brick and other surfaces.

Hydro blasting with soda removing the factor clear coat and finish from a Honda 550cc motor Cleaned by Pete 417.459.7869 media blasting, wet sandblasting, soda blasting.

Hydro blasting is it for you? Hydro blasting we need to educate prospective customers and prospective technicians in this field. I was working on a '67 Shelby Mustang this weekend didn't look like much but the car if done right should be in the 40 to 50 grand area when finished according to the customer. He had be working on it for about 3 month trying to blast it himself. He heard of my "hydro blasting" service from a mutual friend, said he has been restoring cars for years and never knew any thing about this type or form of blasting. He was simply amazed at what I did in the 3 hours I was there. If we can get the word out on this service I know we can elevate it to a professional level.

This is just something to think about, trying to change of the public view of what a power or pressure does. With so many "low ballers" "weekend worriers" and the perception of working for beer money. Specialized fields filling niche markets is one way of doing this. I pulled up with 3 washers and two blasting set-ups on our small S10 flatbed pick-up with all that would be need for the job. Customer was not quite sure that what I had could meet his expectations which he said I far exceeded. It was so nice since he could not trailer it to a blasting location to have the work done, and not seeing a large trailer with a huge compressor on it was amazing.

Hydro blasting, media blasting or whatever we wish to call it. Cleaned by Pete 417.459.7869 #wet sandblasting, #soda blasting.

So what do we call this? How do we promote it? Where do we go from here? Knowledge is the key to success. I have learned to do most of this by years of hard work and some trial and errors. I grew up building bikes and cars and that is why I specialize in this field. Help us change the views of what we do and help promote a professional look to this industry.
